Ringtail

This is pretty cool. I had a tip from a friend that there might be a ringtail living in this particular canyon. This is a nocturnal animal, related somewhat to raccoons, that is very rarely seen. They aren't endangered, and are found throughout the southwest, but a combination of their habits and preferred habitat keep them out of sight of people. They are extremely agile, good jumpers, and eat just about anything - including insects, mice, and berries. Legend has it miners used to keep them around to rid their cabins of rodents, giving them the nickname "miner's cat". In size, they are smaller than a fox, and larger than a squirrel. This one seems to like the small pool of water at the base of a cascade in this narrow, sheltered canyon.

Wow. Great vids, and lucky you. Ringtails are on my camera trapping wish list, but none have poked their shy & elusive heads up for me yet. Some day.

Congratulations on capturing this elusive animal on video - it's lovely to see one alive and well! My dog located a dead and rather decayed one in the Arroyo Seco upstream from Gould campground a few years ago, except I didn't know what type of animal it was. Took me a while to work it out.

Very nice, indeed! We've been searching for them on the Chimineas Ranch in SLO County, but so far without success. Your footage will spur us on. Good work, CM.

Beautiful and elusive. I'm surprised how long it stayed around in the camera's view, instead of just passing through.

clark - we think its den is right under the tree the camera is under. (there is some deadfall, and rocky spaces here) He comes out around the same time each night. The camera is still there - I should have even more footage soon!

The two animals I haven't come across are a mountain lion and a ringtail.

That's the first time I've seen footage of a ringtail. Great imagery. Thanks for posting.

Great footage of a rarely seen mammal. I've seen two in the wild very briefly in California while driving on back roads in the wee hours. Thanks for this.
